# Get started

> From nothing to a ringing phone.

Four things stand between you and a call. Two of them take a minute in the
dashboard; the other two are the ones worth reading about.

    Sign up at [phone.wixzel.com](https://phone.wixzel.com/signup), with an email
    and password or with Google.

  <Step title="Create an API key">
    In the dashboard, go to **API keys → Create key**. Name it after the thing that
    will use it — `production backend`, `staging worker` — because that name is how
    you will decide what to revoke later.

    The scopes are preselected to exactly what the steps below need. Leave them
    alone the first time.

      The key is shown **once**. We store a hash of it, not the key, so it cannot be
      recovered — only replaced. Copy it before you close the panel.

  <Step title="Add credit">
    Calls are refused before they are placed if the account cannot fund
    [`MIN_CALL_SECONDS`](/credits) of talking, so an empty balance is not a slow
    failure — it is a `402` at admission.

  <Step title="Bring a SIP trunk">
    This is the part that is not a button. Wixzel Phone does not resell telephony —
    you connect your own carrier, and your carrier rates stay yours.

    If you already have a trunk, you need its host, username and password. If you do
    not, any SIP provider will sell you one. See [SIP trunks](/sip-trunks).

      Whichever carrier you use, allowlist **`95.216.218.102`** on your trunk. That is
      the address calls are placed from, and most carriers authorise outbound calls by
      source IP. Skip it and the trunk will look configured while no call ever
      completes.

## Then place a call

With a key, credit and a trunk, the [Quickstart](/quickstart) is four requests
long. It creates the trunk, registers a number on it, defines an agent, and
dials.

## What you do not need

No ElevenLabs account. No Deepgram key. No OpenRouter, Sarvam or Gemini key. One
`wv_live_` key and a balance covers every engine — that is the point of the
product.
